Electrospray ionization raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.

Once dissolved, the peptide is considerably less stable than the solid. Aqueous solutions are usually prepared at neutral to slightly acidic pH, filtered, and divided into single-use aliquots before freezing. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are a common cause of avoidable loss and are best prevented by never refreezing a thawed aliquot. Adsorption to plastic and glass surfaces can lower the measured concentration of dilute solutions, particularly below roughly 0.1 mg/mL. Buffer choice, salt content, and container material all influence how much peptide remains detectable after storage.
Identity and purity are established with standard peptide methods. Reversed-phase HPLC with ultraviolet detection near 214 nm resolves the parent peak from deletion and truncation byproducts, and reports typically quote a main-peak percentage. Mass spectrometry by electrospray or MALDI-TOF confirms the expected molecular mass, while amino acid analysis or peptide mapping can verify composition when the sequence itself is in question. A certificate of analysis that pairs a chromatogram with a mass spectrum is more informative than a purity figure alone. Counter-ion content and residual solvents are separate specifications and are frequently omitted.
Semax is normally supplied as a lyophilized powder, and that form is the most stable. Suppliers commonly recommend storage at -20 °C in a desiccated container protected from light, with short-term handling at room temperature limited to weighing and transfer. Powder that has absorbed moisture degrades faster, so vials should be warmed to ambient temperature before opening to prevent condensation on the contents. Hygroscopic behavior is typical of short hydrophilic peptides, and humidity control matters more than temperature alone for long-term retention.
Identity and purity of Semax are established mainly by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The chromatographic trace gives a purity estimate as a percentage of total peak area, while electrospray or matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization confirms the molecular mass against the calculated value. Amino acid analysis and sequence-specific fragmentation provide further confirmation when a supplier's chain of custody is unclear. Vendors frequently quote a purity figure without stating the detection wavelength or the integration method, which limits how far one number can be compared with another.
Stability depends heavily on physical state. Lyophilized powder held dry, cold and dark retains its content over long periods, whereas dissolved peptide begins to change within days at room temperature. The most cited degradation route is oxidation of the methionine residue, which converts the peptide to a sulfoxide form that elutes differently on chromatography. Hydrolysis of amide bonds and adsorption onto container walls contribute smaller losses. Buffers that exclude oxygen from the headspace slow the oxidation pathway, but no single condition prevents all change indefinitely.

| Purity assessment method | RP-HPLC, around 214 nm | Reported as main-peak area percent |
| Identity confirmation method | ESI-MS or MALDI-TOF | Measured mass compared with calculated mass |
| Common synonyms | ACTH(4-10) analog; Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro | Also written as Semaxum in some sources |
The peptide is prone to several degradation pathways. Oxidation of the methionine residue produces a sulfoxide that elutes close to the parent peak in many chromatographic systems. Hydrolysis of peptide bonds and deamidation of susceptible residues in related sequences also reduce purity over time. Lyophilised material kept dry at minus twenty degrees Celsius and shielded from light is the most stable form commonly described in laboratory practice.
Material sold for laboratory use varies widely in stated purity and documentation. A certificate of analysis should list the analytical method, the column and detector used, and the observed purity value. Independent verification by an outside laboratory is the practical way to confirm identity when documentation is absent or internally inconsistent. Regulatory status differs by country, and a product legal in one jurisdiction may be unapproved or controlled in another.
Identity and purity of semax are established with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet detection, usually at 214 nanometres. Mass spectrometry, most often electrospray ionisation in positive mode, confirms the molecular mass and reveals truncated sequences. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion provide additional structural confirmation. Laboratories typically report purity as the percentage area of the main peak, a figure that does not capture isomeric or oxidised variants unless the method resolves them.
Circulation time for the peptide is short because peptidases cleave it readily. The Pro-Gly-Pro tail is thought to slow breakdown compared with the bare ACTH fragment, but the gain appears modest. Absorption after intranasal dosing is limited, and only a fraction of a dose is expected to reach the central nervous system. Laboratory concentrations therefore sit well above levels achieved systemically, a gap that complicates translation from bench findings to clinical claims.
The mechanisms attributed to semax are inferred from animal and cell studies rather than traced to one confirmed target. The most frequently cited pathway involves increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor in hippocampal and cortical tissue. Some work points to engagement of melanocortin receptors, particularly MC4, which the parent ACTH fragment can activate. Effects on dopaminergic and serotonergic signalling have also been reported. No single account explains all observed results, and the relative weight of each pathway remains unsettled.
Published studies examine a fairly narrow set of endpoints. Rodent experiments commonly measure maze learning, infarct volume after induced ischemia, and tissue levels of neurotrophic factors. Clinical reports from Russian centres describe attention, memory and recovery scores in patients after stroke or transient ischemic attack. Most of those human studies are small and few have been repeated by independent groups. Outcome measures differ between studies, which limits direct comparison.

== Research == In his academic research, Verdine made fundamental discoveries about how organisms manage their genomes: how they tag specific cell types and conduct search-and-destroy operations for cancer-causing abnormalities. Verdine has published more than 190 academic articles. In 2005, Verdine and Anirban Banerjee published research in crystallography showing how enzymes could be used to fix flawed DNA. In 2013, Verdine received a research grant to study cell-penetrating miniproteins in order to target cancer cells. His work has led to the FDA approval of the drugs romidepsin and paritaprevir. Verdine is also the inventor of stapled peptide technology, which stabilizes peptides intended for therapeutic use by introducing an all-hydrocarbon “staple” into the peptide’s linear backbone. These “stapled” peptides have a higher affinity for their targets, enter cells more easily and are less readily degraded.

=== With sulfur species === Thionyl chloride will transform sulfinic acids into sulfinyl chlorides Sulfonic acids react with thionyl chloride to produce sulfonyl chlorides. Sulfonyl chlorides have also been prepared from the direct reaction of the corresponding diazonium salt with thionyl chloride. Thionyl chloride can be used in variations of the Pummerer rearrangement.
These findings suggest that some cocaine-related cognitive deficits are reversible, especially if use begins later in life. A 2018 review found little evidence that chronic cocaine use causes widespread cognitive impairment. Exposure to cocaine may lead to the breakdown of the blood–brain barrier. Cocaine use is frequently associated with involuntary tooth grinding, known as bruxism, which can cause dental attrition and gingivitis. Additionally, stimulants like cocaine, methamphetamine, and even caffeine cause dehydration and dry mouth.
== Properties == The physical and chemical properties of magnetic nanoparticles largely depend on the synthesis method and chemical structure. In most cases, the particles range from 1 to 100 nm in size and may display superparamagnetism.
Clomipramine is the only TCA that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of OCD and that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of OCD; the other TCAs failed clinical trials for this indication, likely due to insufficient serotonergic activity.

Hegseth was sworn in as the secretary of defense by JD Vance on January 25. Hegseth identified several priorities for the Department of Defense, including to "revive the warrior ethos", restore trust in the military, redevelop the nation's industrial base, ease the department's process to purchase weaponry, defend the US domestically, engage with Indo-Pacific to deter China, and support Trump's effort to "end wars responsibly"—including the Russo-Ukrainian War and the Middle Eastern crisis. In a call to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu a day after being sworn in, Hegseth said that the United States was "fully committed" to the security of Israel. Hegseth revoked the security clearance and detail of Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and chief of staff of the Army who later became a critic of Trump, and ordered an inspector general inquiry into Milley's tenure as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; the inspector general of the Department of Defense, Robert Storch, was removed from his position when Trump dismissed several inspectors general. According to The Washington Post, the Department of Defense Education Activity began removing certain books on immigration and sexuality. Hegseth visited the Mexico–United States border with Tom Homan, Trump's border czar, in El Paso, Texas, in February, where he stated that the federal government intended to gain complete "operational control of the southern border". He renamed Fort Liberty to Fort Bragg, its original name honoring the Confederate general Braxton Bragg.
== Staff == The Teaching and Research Staff (TRS) of the department consists of about 150 people (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Lecturers). Members EIB / ACC, administrative staff is 36 people.
====== Nano-DESI ====== One of the possible ways to measure the content of single cells is nano-DESI (nanospray desorption electrospray ionization). Unlike desorption electrospray ionization, which is a desorption technique, nano-DESI is a liquid extraction technique that enables the sampling of small surfaces, therefore suitable for single-cell analysis. In nano-DESI, two fused silica capillaries are set up in a V-shaped form, closing an angle of approx. 85 degrees. The two capillaries are touching therefore a liquid bridge can be formed between them and enable the sampling of surfaces as small as a single cell. The primary capillary delivers the solvent to the sample surface where the extraction happens and the secondary capillary directs the solvent with extracted molecules to the MS inlet. Nano-DESI mass spectrometry (MS) enables sensitive molecular profiling and quantification of endogenous species as small as a few hundred fmol-s in single cells in a higher throughput manner. Lanekoff et al. identified 14 amino acids, 6 metabolites, and several lipid molecules from single cheek cells using nano-DESI MS.

=== Season 1 === At the Great Council of 101 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen's eldest male descendant Prince Viserys Targaryen is chosen to be the heir to the Iron Throne over his eldest descendant Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. In a time skip to the ninth year of Viserys' reign, his wife Queen Aemma Arryn is pregnant with a son, having experienced several previous miscarriages. At a great tournament celebrating the impending birth of Viserys' son, the Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower warns Viserys against making his brutish younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen his heir over his daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, but Viserys ignores Otto's advice. Viserys departs the tourney to be present as Aemma gives birth, but finds Aemma and the baby's lives to be at risk. He authorizes Grand Maester Mellos to perform a caesarian section in order to save the baby, completely aware that the procedure will kill Aemma. Aemma dies in agony giving birth to their son Baelon, who passes away a day later in infancy. Otto has his daughter Lady Alicent Hightower console Viserys, and informs the small council that Daemon drunkingly referred to the deceased Baelon as "the heir for a day". An enraged Viserys confronts Daemon, who complains that he never had any support for him and insults Viserys as a weak king who is easily manipulated by Otto and his circle. He exiles Daemon to the Vale to consummate his marriage to Lady Rhea Royce, and removes Daemon's status as Viserys' heir with Rhaenyra.

Each freeze-thaw cycle can degrade a fraction of the peptide and promote aggregation. Dividing a stock solution into single-use volumes removes repeated cycling as a variable. It also limits the time a thawed solution spends at room temperature.
A high main-peak percentage says little about identity, counter-ion content, or residual solvents. It also does not distinguish an isomer or a closely eluting analog. Mass confirmation and the accompanying documentation cover those gaps.
Salt form changes mass, solubility, and hygroscopicity, and acetate and trifluoroacetate salts behave differently in solution. Storage guidance still centers on -20 °C for powder and lower temperatures for solutions. The certificate should state which salt is present.
Suppliers normally quote a percentage of total chromatographic peak area, most often from reversed-phase HPLC. That figure says nothing about what the remaining percentage contains, and it depends on the detection wavelength used. A mass spectrometry result is a separate and stronger check on identity.
